Driving UK HPC Enabled Science and Innovation Through US Collaborations

Dr Lee Margetts recently represented N8 HPC on a visit of HPC experts to the US to identify areas for collaboration. A report of their findings is now available.

In February 2013, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office Science and Innovation team, together with Research Councils UK (RCUK), organized a delegation of High Performance Computing (HPC) experts from the UK to visit the USA to (1) identify areas and mechanisms for collaboration between the UK and USA; and (2) identify lessons the UK could learn from the USA HPC community – especially with regard to engagement with industry and the software challenge.

Dr Lee Margetts was invited to be part of the delegation, representing the University of Manchester and the N8 HPC. A report is now available that presents the findings of that delegation, including recommendations for action, along with a summary of the visits and meetings occurring during the week.

BBC – In the Mood for Music

The first of our industrial case studies has been published. Learn how the BBC collaborated with N8 HPC to use our skills and resources to slash the processing time of a large music database. A fantastic example of how N8 HPC is working with industry to tackle their issues.

N8 HPC at Café Scientifique

Aaron Turner from the N8 HPC team at the University of York recently presented at Yorks Café Scientifique. His presentation entitled “Scientific Research and the Latest Computers: The Long, the Big and the Small” discussed how modern large-scale computation is affecting scientific research, as High Performance Computing (HPC) opens up possibilities in all directions.
